8th Grade News – Jan 18, 2019

Good morning 8th Grade Families!

1.  The school newsletter is attached.   Please note that raffle tickets for the Gala went home with packets yesterday.  It is extremely important that you keep track of these and return the ticket stubs and any unsold tickets to the office.  We have to keep track of every ticket!

2.  Disinfecting Wipes (like Clorox wipes):  We have exhausted our class supply already.  I bought 7 containers to get us through a little while but would appreciate any donations to keep us going through the rest of the year.  We try and disinfect the classroom daily to keep germs at bay.  We don’t have to have brand name wipes – Target, Safeway and more are fine.  Just make sure they are not baby wipes.

3.  Julia Robinson Math Festival:   The Julia Robinson Math Festival is a fun afternoon of math activities hosted on the UW campus.  Students are given the opportunity to explore and try out a variety of great open-ended math problems with the help of math volunteers.
I have volunteered with the festival and it is a great afternoon of learning.

4.  Important Dates:
Monday, Jan. 21 – NO SCHOOL – Dr. Martin Luther King commemoration
Thursday, Jan. 24 – ReRegistration for current families begins online and is open until February 4.  This only applies for you if you have younger students also.  During this time, current school families receive a discount on the Registration fee AND lock in this year’s tution rate. Current families are offered this priority registration opportunity, which helps SMS determine how many new students can be added beginning Feb. 5. Please read the details in the email sent to all current families earlier this week. (If for some reason, you did not receive it, please let us know as soon as possible!)
Sunday, Jan. 27 – OPEN HOUSE 9:30 – 12:30 Many of your 6th graders are excited to become Student Ambassadors, and we can use your help as well. Invite friends, family and neighbors to come for a visit! It happens that middle school is a time we have families interested in transferring their students into our middle school, with its smaller classes, more individualized attention and proven success record in preparing students for high school.
And this event also kicks off Catholic Schools Week, with additional special events during the week, including:
Wednesday, Jan. 30 – GrandFriends Day – Mass followed by Pancake Breakfast. You will have received an invitation form in your Family Bulletin this past week. There is no charge, but it helps ahead of time to know how many pancakes we will need!
February 12 – 14 Accreditation Visitation Days – Classroom observations and special meetings with school community stakeholders
Tuesday, Feb. 12 – 6:00 – 7:00 pm Meeting with Parent Stakeholders – your opportunity to provide input as parents directly to the Accreditation Team
Thursday, Feb. 14 – NEW!! HALF DAY (to accommodate finalization of Accreditation with staff)  – and ANNUAL MIDDLE SCHOOL VALENTINE’S DAY LUNCH (More details on this special event later)
Friday Feb. 15 – NO SCHOOL, begin Winter Break until….
Monday, Feb. 25 – Return from Winter Break
