October is flying by quickly.  The first trimester is almost over.
Notes for the week:
1.  ITBS Week:  Oct. 23-27 is SMS Iowa Basic Skills Testing(ITBS) for all of our students in grades 3-8.

Here are a few items to remember when preparing your child for this test week:

  • Since there will be little homework assigned this week–Monday–Thursday, make sure your child receives plenty of good sleep each evening.

  • Please be sure to have your students arrive on time – avoid the last minute panic rush

  • Make sure they come to school each morning having eaten a nutritious breakfast.

  • Your child needs to bring these items to school: **water bottle; healthy snacks;  ***# 2 pencils,  sharpened;  calculator for parts of Math test

  • We highly encourage you to make any appointments for your child on another week, so they have consistency this week for their testing schedule.

2.  High School –
Open Houses are starting this week:
  • Archbishop Murphy High School 11/12/17, 1/4/18
  • Bishop Blanchet High School 10/25/17
  • Eastside Catholic High School 11/15/17, 12/6/17
  • Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart 10/28/17, 1/9/18
  • Holy Names Academy 10/22/17, 1/4/18
  • Kennedy Catholic High School 11/1/17
  • O’Dea High School 11/8/17, 1/4/18
  • Seattle Preparatory High School 11/7/17
If you have not registered your child for placement tests, please do so soon.
Recommendation forms and transcript release forms are due at SMS by Friday, November 17.  We need time to complete these and gather the paperwork in order to deliver them to the high schools before Christmas.
3.  Halloween Party
Thank you to all who have signed up to bring items for the party.  The list is almost filled in just a few short days.  We still need more parents or guardians who want to help with setup, clean up and party stations.  As a reminder, the link is at:

Mr. Sherman has declared Halloween to be a free dress day.  However, costumes are not worn to school.  Students will be able to change into costumes at the beginning of the party.

4.  All Saints’ Day

8th graders are presenting the SMS Saints Museum after Mass on Nov 1.  They have been hard at work on this in the Religion class.  If your child needs any assistance with their costume, they can check with me.  I have some resources available for borrowing.

5.  Service Hours
As a reminder, middle school students are supposed to complete 5 service hours each trimester.  There are quite a few ways students can complete this requirement.  It does not have to be for a non-profit agency.  It can be as simple as helping out a neighbor.  The paragraph about the service hours and the log are due to your child’s Religion teacher by November 3 for the first trimester.
Have a great weekend!
